It is with both heavy hearts and deep appreciation that Eastern University and Palmer Theological Seminary honor the passing of Rev. Dr. Tony Campolo, one of Eastern's most influential alumni and a beloved member of our community. Tony, a devout follower of Jesus who dedicated his life to serving others and spreading the message of love, compassion, and justice, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2024, at the age of 89, surrounded by his family in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.
Tony’s impact on the Eastern University community, and the world, is immeasurable. A gifted educator, scholar, and passionate advocate for social change, Tony’s career spanned over six decades, leaving a profound legacy behind him. He inspired students, faculty, and staff alike throughout his time in the Eastern community. Tony’s teaching shaped many of us in many ways and was integral to the university’s mission of Faith, Reason, and Justice. A beloved member of the Eastern and Palmer alumni community, Tony also earned several degrees from both Eastern Baptist College and Eastern Baptist (now Palmer) Theological Seminary.
Tony’s impact reached far beyond academia. His legacy is not only recognized within our community, but throughout the world. His work as a public speaker and author left a lasting mark on the broader Christian community, encouraging people around the world to embrace a faith that actively engages with the world’s needs.
Beyond the classroom, Tony championed the “Red Letter Christianity” movement, challenging us all to live out the radical love of Christ through acts of justice, mercy, and compassion for those less fortunate than us. He also founded Eastern's Campolo Center for Ministry (CCM), which equips Eastern University and Palmer Seminary students through scholarships, mentoring, and discipleship to grow in faith and make an impact in the world. His vibrant legacy will continue to live on through CCM’s students and alumni.
Though his impact spans far and wide, those who were fortunate enough to get to know Tony on a personal level will remember him for his colorful storytelling, infectious energy, and gift for blending wit with profound wisdom. Although his passing feels like an immense loss to us here on Earth, we remember the words of 2 Corinthians 5:8: “We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” Tony’s steadfast faith and love for humanity, lived out in every corner of his life, now finds its fulfillment in the presence of the God he so faithfully served each and every day of his life.
Our hearts and prayers are with Tony’s loving wife, Peggy, his children, Lisa and Bart, his grand- and great-grandchildren, during this time of grief. His family was Tony’s greatest passion, and his love for them was boundless. A memorial service to celebrate Tony’s remarkable life will be held on January 25, 2025. Learn more about the event.
As we mourn his passing, let us also reflect on and give thanks for the extraordinary legacy Tony leaves behind him. May we continue to live out the values he inspired in us, striving to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. (Micah 6:8)
